It’s always amused me that if you exhibit a passionate interest in science fiction or, say, computers, you are considered a nerd or a geek, unfit for normal social intercourse, whereas, exhibit a passionate interest in football or – a pox on reality television – Big Brother, and nobody bats an eyelid. Well, as someone who indulges a deep and passionate interest in both SF and football, I can tell you that football fans are every bit as geeky as SF fans – what’s the difference between being able to name the last two dozen Hugo winners and being able to name the last two dozen FA Cup winners? Not much as far as I can see.
